On the 27th April 1944 Pilot Maffre flew Halifax LL-243 (WL-U) on a mission to bomb the railyards at Montzen. This crew FTR as the A/C was shot down by a night fighter (Obit George Fengler, I. /NJG 1).
It crashed at 0140 at Wittem, (Limburg), 18km ESE of Maastricht, four crew did not survive; P/O Maffre, P/O Snow, Sgt. Meek, and P/O Cownden. Two evaded capture; F/O Arscott and F/O Stacey. Sgt. Fuller became a POW.
