Back safely at their home airfield, three members of the Bluenose squadron can afford to laugh at their recent experience while bombing Leverkusen with other Halifax crews of the RCAF bomber group.
The skipper, P/O David Evans, of 363 Courtleigh Blvd., Toronto, (left) “just headed west and kept on going” after his navigator, F/O Edson Armour, 26, of 49 Alfred St., Brantford, Ont. (Center) blacked out from lack of oxygen. Flak bursts that narrowly missed the others also severed the oxygen line and intercom of the bomb aimer, F/Sgt. Donald Jackson, 23, of 636 Assumption St., Windsor, Ont. It was the crew’s first trip although the 20-year-old pilot had made one previous jaunt over Germany as “second dickie”.
Crew 56 piloted by P/O David Evans “FTR”on 18/19 March 1944 on an “Op” to Heligoland, all were killed. (A full crew image in Air Crew photos)
